Description

Album collected by Sir Thomas Berry Cusack Smith when British Consul in Samoa in the 1890s. Images taken by Thomas Andrew, John Davis, and unidentified photographers. Includes general scenes of life in Samoa, including the building of a fale (house); harvesting coconuts; fishing; canoes; boat races; and picnic scenes. Two photographs show the bombardment of Luatuanuu in August 1894.

Numbers of portraits of people associated with the British Consulate, including various members of the Royal Navy; young European women; Fijian men, including Sir John Thurston, Governor of Fiji; and one of a Solomon Islander in native dress.

Description: Four uniformed Samoan employees of Her Britannic Majesty's (HBM) High Commissioner's Court For the Western Pacific. The men wear turbans, lava lava, and white short sleaved shirts emblazened with "V R" and a crown. Above then on the wall of a building, a notice board proclaims the commissioners court, and also informs that the building is the office of HM Deputy Commissioner for Samoa and Tokelau.
