Description: Photographs of Samoa taken between 1905 and 1936, some taken by Samoan photographer Alfred James Tattersall, many by unidentified photographers. One photograph is not related to the rest, showing two young women flautists from Highcliff School, Dunedin, winners of a Dunedin competition in 1918 (P 90) The earliest ones, taken in 1905, show the damage caused by a volcanic eruption, and show lava pouring into the sea. The rest of the images are related to Donald Alexander John Rutherford, headmaster at Ifi Ifi School (Leififi School) from 1919, becoming Superintendent of Schools from 1923 to 1936. There are many scenes which include his family, with his wife and four children (including Alexander Mathieson Rutherford). Many of the scenes show school activities, including the ceremonies surrounding the opening of the new school at Avele; the schools at Malifa, at Ifi Ifi, Poutasi, Aleipata and other districts; sports teams; school parades, including boy scouts linked with the schools; and groups of teachers, both European and Samoan. General views of Samoa include the construction of a fale, the interior of a fale; fishing; cocoa beans and their harvesting and drying; copra industry, with Solomon Island workers; and sowing cotton seed. Several images show the celebrations for George V's birthday; school breakup feasts; and the farewell flotilla of canoes when the Rutherford family left Samoa in 1936. Social activities of the Europeans in Samoa include tennis, large groups of bowlers, and garden parties at Vailima, the Governor's residence. Description: Album collected by Sir Thomas Berry Cusack Smith when British Consul in Samoa in the 1890s. Images taken by Thomas Andrew, John Davis, and unidentified photographers. Includes general scenes of life in Samoa, including the building of a fale (house); harvesting coconuts; fishing; canoes; boat races; and picnic scenes. Two photographs show the bombardment of Luatuanuu in August 1894. Description: Photographs of the Japaneses capitulation in South East Asia and the Pacific, particularly Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. They include a number of photographs of Japanese prisoners of war being marched to camps; the signing of surrender documents by Australian officers; painting Japan Surrenders on the underside of RAAF plane wings to inform Japanese forces; the announcement of the Japanese surrender by Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten in Singapore; the Duke of Gloucester, Governor General of Australia, visiting troops; a Japanese tank on fire; and earlier photographs of Allied forces on Bougainville in 1944. The photographs are nearly all official Royal New Zealand Air Force and are captioned on the reverse. Also included with the collection is a copy of New Zealand Freemason frm May 1977 which includes a photograph of the NZEF Masonic Association meeting in 1918 in France.. Description: Compiled by S Percy Smith. Album includes 42 pages of photographs of Samoan scenery, towns, buildings, and portraits. Photographers represented include Burton Brothers, Thomas Andrew, J Davis, and A & W. As well as Samoa, this album includes photographs of men and one woman in the Solomon Islands; their ceremonial dress, weapons, and a house with an ornately woven patterned wall, and thatched roof. The last two photographs show men with weapons, wearing masks. Several photographs show images relating to Robert Louis Stevenson. One (on page 32) shows "R L Stevenson & party". Stevenson and his wife with European and Samoan men and women are seen standing at the back of a large group on the steps of the verandah at Vailima. The verandah is draped with fern leaves. The group seated in front on the stairs includes Samoan men, mostly holding axes, and a group of sailors holding musical instruments. Description: Shows head and shoulders portraits of four young men of Tikopia in the Solomon Islands. All except the figure at lower left are tattooed and bearded. The figure at lower left wears a necklace, and the man at upper right wears a disc-shaped pendant on a cord around his neck. The two right hand figures each wear a gold earring. Other variations of this image show the figures in reverse. Other Titles - Inhabitants of the island of Tikopia Sainson made the original drawings for these subjects in 1827 or 1828.
