[Hone and the Maori Party] 8 December 2009
- Date
- 2009
- Reference
- DCDL-0012976
- Description
The cartoon shows Maori Party MP Hone Harawira standing with crossed arms grinning very cheerfully; behind him stand the co-leaders of the party Pita Sharples and Tariana Turia looking less than amused. Refers to the unofficial sidetrip taken by Harawira and his wife to Paris while in Europe at tax-payers' expense. Hone Harawira was widely criticised for this as well as his use of foul language and strong anti-Pakeha comments in an email. There was a question of whether he should remain in the Maori Party as his behaviour was considered to have brought the party into disrepute. In the end he was allowed to remain but not entirely with his leadership's blessing.
