Bowie was associated with the setting up of the Auckland Repertory Theatre in 1937 and was a regular producer of plays in Auckland in the late 1930s, and 1940s. During the 1950s he moved to Wellington and produced plays for Unity, Stagecraft and the Wellington Repertory Theatre. He also made several films for the National Film Unit, including the production presented at EXPO 70 in Japan.
