Two billboards outside a newspaper kiosk read 'Actors Equity threatens Hobbits!' and 'School kids shattered by PPTA strike'. A man stops to read them and comments to the newspaper seller that it's a 'Damned shame these unions can't pick on someone their own size!' Refers to the Hobbit saga in which a dispute between Warner Brothers, represented by Peter Jackson, and NZ Actors Equity, over a union demand for negotiations over the terms and conditions offered in the contracts for actors and others working on the film very nearly caused the film to be made somewhere else. Refers also to the teachers' strikes over the PPTA teacher's union demand for a 4 per cent pay rise over one year and rejection of the Ministry of Education's offer of 1.5 per cent this year and a further 1 per cent next year. PPTA President Kate Gainsford told Radio NZ 'It's not just a problem about what teachers have got in their back pocket. There are a whole range of claims in our package, and none of them have been addressed - none of them have been thought about, none of them have been responded to properly.'
