The cartoon shows a man representing 'The Labour Party' trying to force his way between or force apart two huge rocks, one representing 'expulsion' and the other 'legality'. Text above reads 'Chris Carter... Or stuck between a rock and a hard place...' Refers to the scandal that has caused Te Atatu MP, Chris Carter, to be suspended from the Labour Party after he confessed to responsibility for an anonymous letter, sent through parliament's internal mail system, that implied that Labour leader, Phil Goff, would be challenged before the next election. There is still strong support for Chris Carter in his Te Atatu electorate which is concerned about issues of process and natural justice. Party president, Andrew Little, has said that the party's interests both in terms of its political interests and preserving it from the risk of litigation have to be considered. Labour MPs have rallied behind Goff and questioned Carter's mental state.
