Description

Travels of HMS "Sussex" from Britain to Australia, New Zealand, and Melanesia during 1934 and 1935.

The first section is a tour to Australia with the Duke of Gloucester from September to November 1934. This section has images of the Duke, the crew at play and performing during crossing the line ceremonies. There is a view of sailors in their sleeping quarters and others sleeping on deck. Places depicted are Sri Lanka, and Australian cities Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, and Hobart.

Following are photographs taken during a summer cruise from 28 February to 18 April 1935. This was from Sydney to Lord Howe Island to New Zealand and back to Sydney via Hobart, Tasmania. In New Zealand the ship called into Russell, Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin. There are views of Russell, Auckland and Wellington, and others recording a trip to Ohinemutu and Rotorua.

After its return to Sydney, HMS Sussex went on a spring cruise lasting from 16 July until 15 November 1935. This consisted of a visit to the Island groups in Melanesia via Brisbane and the Great Barrier Reef. In the Solomons the ship visited Faisi, Tulaghi (in the Florida Islands), Hog Harbour (Espiritu Santo), Vila (on Efate Island), and Tanna Island. In the Loyalty Islands it called into Sandal Bay (Lifou Island), then on to Noumea (New Caledonia), returning to Australia and ultimately Sydney.
