Thorsen was born in South Africa and spent most of his working life at sea. Prior to his retirement in 1978, he worked for the Marine Division of the Ministry of Transport in Picton. In 1980-1981 he spent two and a half months as the guest of the Magistrate on Pitcairn Island and returned to New Zealand on the ketch Kebir as far as Tahiti and the remainder of the journey on the freighter Bounty II.
