- Description
Viscount Squanderfield wearing a gold-lace suit like his father is seated in the house of a quack. Objects scattered throughout the scene indicate that his man practises forms of uninviting medicine, occultism and procurement. Skeletons, heads, mummies and machines akin to medieval racks of torture adorn the room. In the foreground Squanderfield half-jokingly questions the benefits of the doctor's pills, a cure for the venereal disease he has passed on to the young prostitute beside him (whose handkerchief may hid a syphilitic sore on her lip). His cane points upwards to the bodiless head of a wigged nobleman in the cupboard behind. The bow-legged doctor busies himself with cleaning his glasses. Between them is her mother feigning anger in order to blackmail Squanderfield, huge in her hooped skirt, and with a penknife in her hand. The doctor is believed to be the girl's father.
