Physical Description: Silver medal and bar 75 x 40 mm, suspended from purple ribbon, total dimensions 115 x 40 mm, in red leather case 150 x 82 x 30 mm, lined with violet velvet.
Provenance: The medal was awarded on 1 April 1886, for Mair's action in combatting troops of Te Kooti near Rotorua in February 1870.
The medal was previously displayed in a cabinet in a publicly accessible room at Turnbull House. After being missing for about 35 years, it was returned anonymously to Te Papa in March 2006; staff there recognised it as having previously belonged to the Alexander Turnbull Library. See newsclipping from Dominion Sunday Times, 13 October 1991, discussing the loss. Housed with packaging in which the medal was returned to the Library in March 2006. During its absence from the Library, the date "1870" on the reverse has been partially scratched out. Black and white photo negative 1/2-002631 shows the inscription intact.
