Description

Head and shoulders profile of Maori chief, Rino, of Golden Bay. He is shown with a peacock feather above his forehead, a red ruff, and a black cloak

Pencilled "James Clevely" on the back of the work is incorrect speculation about the artist's identity by a previous owner or vendor, presumably because of the apparent J C signature. James Cleveley was the artist of views of Tahiti in 1778 on Cook's third voyage.

Rino (the correct form of the subject's name) was principal chief of Te Ati Awa of Golden Bay

Other Titles - Rino

Inscriptions: Verso - In pencil: "James Clevely"; Recto - Beneath image; title in ink. Bottom right: artist's monogram IC in an elaborate loop
