Description

The cartoon shows Nick Smith Minister for Climate Change as Don Quixote on his horse which represents 'ETS'; he is getting ready to charge a windmill that represents 'climate change'. In the background is PM John Key, also on a horse. Text above reads 'Alone and deluded, Nick Quixote charges the fanciful enemy...' He yells at the rest of the world to follow him. Refers to the introduction of the ETS on 1st July 2010. A critic writes "I kind of think ETS stands for Enforced Theft Scheme - under the guise of enviromentalism the ordinary people in NZ end up subsidising large forestry owners and other "hand-picked" industrialists.' Nick Smith himself says "The ETS is the most efficient and least cost way to bring emissions under control, meet our international obligations and protect NZ's clean, green brand. The ETS means those who emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from a vehicle, power station or factory will pay $12.50 per tonne from July 1. Those who plant trees and absorb CO2 receive $25/t. The benefits of the ETS are that it will drive investment in renewable electricity, forestry and energy efficiency and reduce New Zealand's emissions by 19 million tonnes by 2012. Kerry Woodham writes that the 'ETS is a crock' a scheme that few understand and that no-one believes will save the planet.
