The cartoon has two frames. In the first frame National Leader, John Key holds out an olive branch to David Benson-Pope as he offers to accept the Anti-smacking Bill if the wording can be modified. David Benson-Pope seizes the olive branch, laments that it does not have the rigidity of a cane, and hits John Key with it because he regards the offer as an attempt to make Labour look inept. Refers to David Benson-Pope's tennis ball debacle from the time he was a teacher and used corporal punishment.
