Description

Poster advertising the 1920 New Zealand tour by the Australian circus company, St Leon's Circus. Lists the following performers: Baffling Tillee Brothers (Anglo-French telepathists), Mdlle Golda (wire artiste), eight St Leons acrobats, Leo Sylvester & Collie (horse and rider), 3 Odessa Sisters (serpentine aeroplane twirls), Celeste and his dogs, Honey & Cherry (triple horizontal bars), 7 Rentfrew Troupe (statuary), Franco the human frog (boneless wonder), Hyman Trio (legmaniacs), Rueben (football pony), Morris with his troupe of mountain sheep and pigs), Joey and Woolum (ladder plane), Romulus the war horse, Jingling Jumpers, Pete Jenkins (hayseed rider), "Gus" the 13.1 champion high jumping pony), Jackeroo and his Blue Mountain rabbit, Adrian and Doris (equestrians), 10 Bezantine Troupe, clowns and dummies with "Cudge" the Harlequin.

Mark St Leon writes (10 November 2007): "As with a lot of circus programs, family members may have performed in several different acts under other names. The St Leon family for this tour comprised the brothers Syl, Reg and Adrian and their sister Daisy (Mrs Alf Honey) and the Honeys' daughters, Golda, Doris ('Conchita'), Loreen and Florence. Ray St Leon was their cousin. Golda was "Mdlle Golda" and the sisters Doris, Loreen and Florence were the 3 Odessa Sisters/Honey Trio. Alf Honey and his partner Frank Cherry were gymnasts, although the "Cherry" for this tour was probably not the Frank Cherry of the original act of 1908-09. 'Professor' Morris was an animal trainer. Joey & Woolum was, I think, Syl and Adrian St Leon. The Rentfrew Troupe/Bezantine Troupe were mostly the family. Walter St Leon (father of Ray) was present for the early part of the tour and presented the war horse Romulus".
