Description

Head and shoulders profile portrait of 'Tiarrah' (i.e. Tara), showing his moko. He is wearing a feather cloak.

Tara was principal chief of the Ngati Manu, based at Kororareka, his territory extending to Kawakawa and possibly beyond. Thought to be in his mid-70s on his death in 1818.

Probably the first portrait of a Maori published in Europe in the nineteenth century
