Description

The cartoon shows three members of the ACT Party, from the left, Roger Douglas, David Garrett and Rodney Hide. Roger Douglas reads a newspaper with a headline reading 'Govt favours left turn' and laments 'the end of civilization as we know it'. Dave Garrett, believes that the prime minister, John Key, 'should be sterilized along with the poor'. Rodney Hide relieves their anguish by pointing out that the article is about road rules. Refers to the intention by the government to scrap the confusing right hand rule and replace it with a simpler system, which would reverse the current rule. Currently if turning you must give way to all traffic not turning, and in all other situations, give way to traffic crossing or approaching from the right. That means a car turning right across the oncoming stream of traffic has precedence over the car turning left with the traffic behind it and at uncontrolled T-intersections with two cars wishing to turn right, traffic on the driver's right gets priority. The sterilization statement refers to David Garrett's suggestion that bad parents should be offered a $5000 incentive to get sterilised.
