Lodge, Nevile Sidney, 1918-1989 :'Govt's 19 majority now 17 - Creech wins Wairarapa seat'. "It's quite simple - Creech won, so the opposition has one seat more and the government has one seat less, but it's only ONE seat each way." "Well, it still looks as though the government has lost two seats, to me." "Dead right! When you have one each way on a horse that's two, so -" 13 July 1988

Description

The family discusses Wyatt Creech's win by chalenge of the Wairarapa seat and argue about whether the government has a majority of one or two seats. Refers to the 1987 election, in which Reg Boorman won by one vote, but Creech later challenged that result on the grounds that Boorman had violated new laws about election spending. Creech also challenged more than 200 votes (on various grounds). The Electoral Court approved Creech's petition, and Creech won the seat in 1988 with a majority of 34 votes (9994 to 9960).
