Description

The cartoon shows Chinese President, Hu Jintao, standing on top of the Beehive which is twisting out of shape under his weight. Hu Jintao waves a Chinese flag. In the forefront stands the Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibet, and Prime Minister, Helen Clark, leans out from behind the Beehive with a little wave at the Dalai Lama. Refers to a visit to New Zealand in June 2007 by the Dalai Lama during which there was no formal meeting with the government or the opposition. The reason for this was assumed to be New Zealand's desire for free trade with China and it therefore not being seen as politic to be too friendly with the Dalai Lama because of strained relations between China and Tibet. Helen Clark did meet the Dalai Lama 'by chance' at an Australian airport.
