Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - J. Kinder; Recto - bottom right - Old Church Remuera [both inscriptions in brushpoint, in the artist's hand]
The first St Mark's, designed by Frederick Thatcher, was a small wooden chapel. It was pre-fabricated at St John's College in 1847 and replaced with a larger structure in 1859. It was shifted to Bassett Road and demolished in 1925. Kinder was minister of St Mark's from 1860-1863 and helped to pay for the building of the new church in 1859.
