Description

The cartoon is headed 'Labour Day Dreams...' A man has picked up his golfing gear and dreams of a 'hole in one' while his wife hands him a punnet of seedlings and a gardening fork and thinks 'how about holing a few plants instead...' A reference to the usual joke about the Labour Day holiday often being a day of labouring in the house and garden. Labour Day is on the 4th Monday in October which this year means 23rd October. Labour Day commemorates the struggle for an eight-hour working day. New Zealand workers were among the first in the world to claim this right when, in 1840, the carpenter Samuel Parnell won an eight-hour day in Wellington.
