The Prime Minister, Helen Clark welcoming the new Minister of Maori Affairs, Parekura Horomia. He is eyeing his new seat with suspicion - it is an electric chair. Refers to the difficulties of performing well in the position of Minister of Maori Affairs and to the trouble associated with the previous incumbent, Dover Samuels, who was sacked from the post.
Exhibition caption reads - After Dover Samuel's short and rocky time in the portfolio, new Maori Affairs minister Parekura Horomia might well have had some reservations about his elevation to the cabinet table.
Exhibited in '30 from 2000' exhibition of 30 cartoons from the New Zealand Cartoon Archive collection displayed in the National Library (auditorium foyer) from 7 July 2001. The cartoons were all published in the year 2000. Final selection of cartoons made by Rt Hon Jonathon Hunt, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Denis Welch, New Zealand Listener journalist, and Margaret Calder, Chief Librarian of the Alexander Turnbull Library.
