Goff and Peters. 30 November 2009
- Date
- 2009
- Reference
- DCDL-0012896
- Description
The cartoon shows a photograph of ACT leader Winston Peters and a caricature of leader of the Labour Party Phil Goff dancing on the seashore. Refers to the repeal of the Foreshore and Seabed Act by the government and the Maori Party which brought ACT leader Winston Peters back to the political stage in July after a six months' silence with a blistering attack on the Ministerial review of the Foreshore and Seabed Act. Refers more recently to a speech made by Mr Goff in which he said the current law was working well and the issue was being reopened "for politics, and not for principle". But he denied he was playing the race card. Labour has previously acknowledged it made errors in its law, including ruling out giving Maori customary title over parts of the foreshore and seabed.
