Shows a map of the island at the top, and beneath, four views of the coastal profiles of the island, from the north-west (from 15 and 4-5 miles respectively) and the nor-nor-west (from 6-7 and 3 miles respectively).
Admiral Carteret discovered Pitcairn Island on his Pacific voyage. This plate is probably from a German edition of John Hawkesworth's "Account of the voyages undertaken by order of His present Majesty for making discoveries in the southern hemisphere". A German edition was published in 1775 in three volumes, and entitled "Beschreibung der Reisen um die Welt und Entdeckungen in Sudmeer: welche von den Herren, dem Commodore Byron, Capitain Wallis, Capitain Carteret und Capitain Cook ... ".(Hamburg, 1775).
