- Description
A man is tossed into the air by an earthquake and a boomerang flies through the window. A newspaper headline reads that 'earthquake moves N.Z. closer to Australia' and another reads 'Don Brash wants to close productivity gap between N.Z. and Australia'. The man's wife comments that he can't complain as he wanted the gap between New Zealand and Australia to be narrower. The earthquake on 15 July 2009 that triggered the tsunami was 7.8 magnitude; it was centred in Fiordland, and was felt widely throughout the South Island and as far north as Taranaki. No major damage was reported, though there were some power outages in the south. The 7.8-magnitude quake appears to have jolted the South Island and moved it towards Australia. Refers also to The New Zealand government's decision to establish a special taskforce (chaired by Don Brash) to come up with ways of closing that income gap. It's aiming to have New Zealanders' enjoying the same high living standards as Australians by 2025.
