Description

Shows chapel, school, etc which were destroyed in the 1848 earthquake. Also shows the house of Mr William Brewer on the right, the Bank Hotel beyond that and the theatre among the cluster of buildings in the background. Copied from the engraving by Henry Melville after S C Brees entitled Wesleyan Chapel & Mission house, Wellington, published London, 1847, from a watercolour done in 1845

Varies from Melville's engraving in its staffage. Two horsemen have become one and a bullock team and cart have become two Maori. The heap of earth raised as a defence after the Wairau Affray has become a bush.

The chapel was in Manners street. Built 1844 from a design by Robert Stokes. Boulcott street (the path up the hill) is visible in the background
