- Description
A series of dominoes collapse as one knocks over the next. The first domino is Greece, the second is Ireland, the third is Portugal, which has an image of a weeping rooster on it and the last is the 'euro'. Refers to the economic woes of some of the countries in the European Community. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel faced a groundswell of hostility to sending the Greeks a 22bn lifeline in May 2010 and leaders issued stark warnings about the prospects for the EU and insisted on a punitive new regime for the 16 euro countries if the monetary union is to survive. Germany warned that the EU's future was on the line in the Greek emergency. In November Ireland had to be bailed out and strict austerity measures imposed. Portugal is struggling and is widely expected to tap the rescue fund.
