Description

A view of Poukawa Lake, Hawkes Bay. A path in the foreground and a small canoe on the lake. Swamp or a second lake in the distance. The accompanying text is 'An excellent view of the Te Aute Lakes is obtained from the present line of railway between Napier and Waipukurau'

An island in the middle of this lake was used during the Maori intertribal musket wars in 1818 as a refuge against Ngapuhi raids. Many local people were slaughtered or enslaved here.
