The diary covers the voyage from London to the sighting of New Zealand. Kater's comments daily comment on passengers, events on board, his medical duties, weather, ship's daily position, birds and fish sighted.

Willliam Kater was the surgeon superintendent on the New Zealand Company vessel, `Sir Charles Forbes' under the command of Captain Thomas Bacon. Emigrants embarked at Blackwall 29 Apr 1842, sailed from Gravesend 1 May 1842, and arrived at Nelson on 22 Aug 1842. The `Sir Charles Forbes' was the first vessel to sail from London to Nelson direct.
