The logbook describes the passengers' health and details of treatment and includes observations on the weather and the voyage, 18 Dec 1841-13 May 1842. `Medical comforts' appended, a list of stores, and a chart detailing daily rates of sailing are included at back of volume. Initial page or pages appear to be missing from this holograph.

Thomas Hughes was surgeon superintendent on the `Clifford', a New Zealand Company vessel. The ship sailed from Gravesend on 18 December 1841 for Wellington and Nelson. It arrived at Nelson, its final destination, on 11 May 1842.
