Description

In the first of two frames American President Obama is shown speaking on the phone to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Obama says 'What made you think we'd ignore Syria's brutal treatment of defenceless people?!' In the second frame President al-Assad replies 'We watched your reactions when the Israelis do it!' Context - In a speech in the Middle East President Obama was critical of Assad. "The Syrian government must stop shooting demonstrators and allow peaceful protests; release political prisoners and stop unjust arrests; allow human rights monitors to have access to cities like Dara'a [the town where protests first erupted in mid-March]; and start a serious dialogue to advance a democratic transition'. Al-Assad's comment refers to a belief that President Obama is not taking a strong enough stance against Israel in its treatment of Palestine. (Central Florida Future - David Mariutto 29 May 2011)
