Description

Shows a Maori man with facial moko, sitting cross-legged outside the display window of the commercial premises of William Buchanan the watchmaker in Shortland Street, Auckland, selling crayfish, seven of which crawl in the foreground. The man wears a cloak wrapped over one shoulder, and with red and blue striped lower border. Behind him a Maori boy lies on his front, with his chin propped up on his elbows, and a large kete lies behind the man, on his left.

The title is written in ink on the paper on which the watercolour is mounted. It may not be in the hand of the artist.

The watercolour paper has at some time been folded in four. The number "2" is written at top centre.

Verso of album page has cuttings of tulips, pansies and other flowers.

Provenance: Previously owned in Australia, probably Adelaide. The International Art Centre catalogue notes a link between the artist Charles Heaphy and the Buchanan family.
