Top illustration shows a settler's house with front verandah and fence, and two groups of cattle in the foreground. There is a bush-covered hill in the background.
The lower image shows a group of Maori, one man standing and five seated on the group. All are men except for a woman smoking a pipe at the right. Behind them is a carved structure, perhaps a pataka, and a wooden fence with carved figures on some of its poles.
The text reports an event at Matawhero where several settlers were killed.
