- Description
An engraving of the brass image on top of the tomb of John Mantel(l) or Mauntell, presumably the father of Sir Walter Mauntell who died ca. 1440 (cf. MS papers 83). Shows a man in mediaeval shift, a sword at his side. There are three lions' heads on his shift, and a further lion beneath his feet

Drawn after original tombstone (ca. 1530 x 660 mm), with small brass figure and inscription reading: "Hic iacet Johes Mantele qui obiit xxix die Januar Anno dni millo cccc xxiiij [ie 1424]...".
Below plate, in hand of Gideon Mantell: "In Amberley Church, Sussex, 1842."
