Description

Includes English and Maori correspondence between a variety of people.

The Maori correspondence comprises: a letter from Te Awe of Te Kauri to Elsdon Best, 8 May 1895 (3 pages) discussing battles in the Whanganui district, the naming of the Wanganui river and a whakapapa; letter from Tapiha H Te Wanikau to Te Tina, Amuri Bluff, Kaikoura, 3 June 1895 (4 pages) with notes on place names at Kaikoura and other traditional matters; and a letter from Hauraki Paora to the Polynesian Society secretary, 17 May 1893 (2 pages) giving a traditional history of Ihenga, early ancestor in the Kaipara district. The English correspondence comprises: C W Adams to S P Smith, 1 May 1900 (1 page) concerning payments to Archdeacon Grace for obtaining various Maori names and legends, and suggests a `double vowel' method for indicating long vowels in Maori; Geo R Crummer, Rarotonga to S P Smith, 6 and 31 Mar 1898, from Henry Nicholas, 6 Mar 1898 (4 leaves); Mackay to Atkinson, Greytown, 15 May 1888 (3 pages) about land tenure and enclosing an Evening Post, 12 May 1888 cutting by Thos McDonnell `The Power of the old New Zealand chiefs or Maori law"; attached to the above is a 7-page account in Maori addressed to Atkinson by Ropata Ngarongomate, He Ture Maori (Maori law) giving accounts of laws mainly relating to the transference of land and property; Alfred K Newman to S P Smith, undated headed `The Maori god Ha' (3 leaves) giving his views on the connections of Indian-Asiatic deities with Maori and Polynesian gods; Edward Tregear to S P Smith, Wellington, 4 Jan 1919 (2 pages) dicussing karakia-iri.
