Steam locomotive "J" 56. Photograph taken by an unidentified photographer, held in the W W Stewart Collection. This film negative is a copy from a print in Godber Album Vol 109, p 106 (PA1-q-102), taken from an image in the W W Stewart Collection.
Inscriptions: Album page - bottom right - W.W.S.
"J" Class 56 steam locomotive (Sectional numbering between 1882 and 1890, on the Auckland Section), later numbered "J" 263, was built by Vulcan in 1883 (Maker's No. 1003/83). Went into service in January 1884, and was written off in January 1929. See "Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971" by W G Lloyd (1974, p 36, 56). This image is reproduced in Lloyd's "Register ..." on page 32, with the inscription "Auckland engines in the 1882 system of numbering ... J 56 (Vulcan 1009 of 1883).
