Description

Shows a half-length portrait of a Maori woman wearing a tiki around her neck, pounamu earring and shark tooth earring, and two huia feathers in her hair. She wears a cloak with black fringe border, and has a moko design on her chin.

Auction note: During the latter part of the 19th century, two chiefs came over to Hawkes Bay on an official visit. One of the chiefs took Hinepare as his de facto wife. Hinepare gave birth to Mere, who later married Peter Hiha. Apparently, Mere was almost identical in looks to Hinepare, hence the painting could be a portrait of Hinepare or Mere.

The subject bears some resemblance an unidentified woman from Hawkes Bay photographed by Samuel Carnell probably in the 1880s. The woman in the photograph wears a kiwi feather cloak belonging to Carnell's studio. See reference number 1/4-022188-G
