Commemorative plaque to commemorate the first soldiers to leave New Zealand for active service, the South African War 1899-1902. The first contingent of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles assembled and trained on this ground, then known as Campbell's Farm, and sailed from Wellington on the S.S. Waiwera, October 21st 1899. Arrangement of text, with the plaque reproduced at the head of a letter explaining that the bronze plaque is to be erected at Ben Burn Park in Karori (once Campbell's Farm). The letter is dated from Dunedin on April 4th, 1952, and was circulated by Mr W A Saunders.
