Description

Group at Timaru for the the turning of the first sod for the Timaru-Temuka section of the South Island Main Truck Railway, (on the Christchurch-Timaru line). Mrs Cain holds the spade. Captain Henry Cain, the mayor of Timaru, stands alongside (?). Photographed by an unknown photographer 4 October 1871.

A report of the event was published in the Timaru Herald 7 October 1871.
