Description: Comprises complete set of the company's printed annual reports detailing its construction and operating activities. Includes handwritten note of important dates at front, newspaper clippings, notices of meetings, prospectuses, maps and a copy of the Act effecting the purchase of the company. Source of title - Cover title Company founded in Jan 1881 by Wellington Chamber of Commerce to enable work to re-commence on the Wellington-Johnsonville railway line, begun by government in 1879 but stopped in 1880. The line was completed as far as Longburn, near Palmerston North, and officially opened on 1 Dec 1886. The government exercised its option and nationalised the line, buying the company's assets for £900,000, in 1908. Quantity: 1 volume(s). 0.06 Linear Metres. Description: Album relating to the establishment of a phosphate mining industry at Makatea Island in the Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia, between 1909 and 1913. Images show some of the people involved with the Compagnie Francaise des Phosphates de L'Oceanie, including Maitre Goupil, and Messieurs Touze, Agache and Bonnet; the offices of the company, both in Papeete and on Makatea Island; and the home of Mr Agache in Papeete. There are scenes of sailing ships and steam ships delivering equipment, and scenes of construction of railway lines, jetties and wharves. As well there are views of the villages of Temao and Vaitepaua where workmen lived, with workers coming from other Polynesian islands and many from Japan.
