Description

Shows two horned cattle standing in the centre left foreground on green pasture. Beyond them is a swampy area, with low hills in the background. Two birds fly overhead on a partially cloudy sky.

A view in the Auckland area, probably the Panmure Basin before houses were built there.

The painting was described by Barbara Marshall's mother in her will as a 'painting of a rural scene near Auckland by Symons'.

Physical Description: Watercolour, 317 x 498 mm.

Provenance: Purchased from Hobsons, Wellington, in 2006. It had been passed down from Barbara Marshall (nee Stewart), and wife of the Reverend Cecil Marshall. Barbara Marshall's grandfather was an early New Zealand surveyor John Tiffin Stewart. Barbara Marshall's mother was a Weymouth related to Archdeacon Weymouth in Waipu.
