Descriptions of the first three plants originally depicted in the sketchbook, but now missing: 1. New Zealanders hemp ... grows to ... six feet on the sides of naked hills, in meadows and on the rocky shores of the sea... [flax] 2. Red parasite flower of New Zealand. A shrub which grows without any root out of the trunks of the tallest trees ... [mistletoe] 3. Climbing myrtle ...a beautiful shrubby plant ... twines around very high trees, often altogether covering them ... its flowers of an elegant crimson grow in very large branches ... in New Zealand [rata]
