Description

The majority of the plants depicted come from the Pacific, rather than New Zealand, but all date from records made during Cook's second voyage. Some of the drawings are unable to be identified. A number are tropical orchids. The New Zealand plants are as follows: p. 5. is the single-leafed New Zealand orchid Microtis unifolia, p. 6 is the New Zealand orchid Thelmitra longifolia, p. 24 is ringaringa or arthropodium cirrhatum, p.25 is the daisy celmisia holocerisea, and p. 27 is the kohekohe, dysoxylum spectabile.

With Ms notes (3p.) describing 8 plants, signed "T.F. Forster"; in another hand opposite first watercolour, "Drawn by Mr Hodges the painter who was with Capt Cook"...

Attribution to Hodges supported by Bernard Smith; also attributed to J R Forster, and to J G A Forster and to his daughter Therese. See TL 3/1/1/, 3 Nov, 1983, and R. Joppien's article in Australian journal of art, V. 3, p. 71-72.

Most of the plants shown are closely similar to drawings by Georg Forster. See photographs of the drawings for further details. It is possible that Hodges was sitting alongside Forster, drawing the same specimens; or more probably that these are the work of Forster.

Other Titles - Hodges' drawings of New Zealand and Pacific plants. By William Hodges or Georg Forster
