Shows steam rising from fissures in a barren rolling landscape. Several figures stand in the middle distance watching a geyser issuing from a small volcanic mound with rivulets of water flowing down it. Probably shows Mount Tarawera after the eruption of 1886
Location is somewhere in a thermal region. Title supplied by vendor, based on a cutting attached by a previous owner: "June 10, 1886, the night Tarawera wept tears of fire". New Zealand woman's weekly, 9 June 1980, pages 34-43.
