Description

The title is 'The new horrors of modern war...' A pilot at the controls of a US Air force plane complains that his lower back is killing him because of the 'twelve hour shifts flying a remote controlled drone deciding which wedding feasts in Afghanistan need blowing up'. Context; this is the new kind of virtual war, one so on the cutting edge of technology, morality and international law that it raises as many questions as it does tactical possibilities. Drones like the Reaper, the Air Force's most advanced remotely piloted aircraft, carry a lethal array of bombs and missiles. They fly up to 24 hours, allowing pilots, sensor operators and analysts at bases dotting the U.S. to kill multiple insurgents in a single mission. They've documented the kill and the funeral in the same day. Today's conflict increasingly is being fought by pilots who kill by remote control - and then hit the freeway for the commute home. Gen. David Petraeus, commander of forces in Afghanistan, said drone and manned airstrikes there are up, as is the use of camera-laden blimps and towers since the surge began this year.
