Description

The battle cruiser HMS New Zealand, photographed 2 September 1919 in Lyttelton Harbour by an unidentified photographer. Note snow on hills in background.

Other - Photograph dated from "The last voyage of HMS New Zealand" (NZ Books, 1972), which comments on p44: "Sept 2nd. Morning disclosed snow-capped hills, snow on the streets. Ship's Upper Deck sheathed with ice and extremely hazardous - all hands were put to work to clear the ice in the interests of safety." HMS New Zealand visited Lyttelton twice, 13-22 May 1913 and 1-12 September 1919. Modifications to the ships's superstructure and foremast, made during World War I, are evident in this photograph, making it clear that the photograph was taken on the 1919 visit.
