- Description
A young Maori girl, bare-breasted, with a elaborate hairstyle, a flower in her left hand. She is wearing plaited flax ear adornments, with a stone or shell suspended from them, and has a feather in her hair.
Derived from an engraving by Piron, published in Labillardiere, J. J. Atlas ... du voyage a la recherche de la Perouse ... (Paris, 1800). Plate 25. The original engraving shows this figure as a young man (although the English translation has a title 'Girl of New Zealand', a translation of Piron's ambiguous title 'Jeune sauvage de la Nouvelle Zelande'). No Maori women came out to Labillardiere's ships during his brief visit to Northland in 1793. The engraver for Shoberl's version has added breasts and the flower in the subject's hand
