Trolley track from Waiuta to Snowy River Battery

Date: [ca 1930s]

From: French, Derek : Photographs of Waiuta, West Coast taken by Joseph Divis

Reference: PAColl-4796-17

Description: Trolley track called "the skip", built down a steep hillside from the back of Waiuta to the Snowy River Battery. Photographed by Joseph Divis some time in the 1930s. Source of descriptive information - Historical notes from Library client. 'The skip' formerly identified as 'the ship' but corrected by same Library client. The high front of the wagon was to retain loads during the steep descent from the town to the battery. A loaded skip descended, pulling an empty one up. A load could also be carried uphill by putting a drum on the top skip, filling it with water until it outweighed the skip at the bottom and hauled up. The drum would then be emptied so the next descending load would pull it up again. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s). Physical Description: Silver gelatin print 16 x 20.4 cm
