Born 28 February 1885 at Orlik, near Prague in what is now the Czech Republic. Arrived in New Zealand in February 1909. Worked as a miner, mostly on the West Coast, and for most of his life in New Zealand at the Blackwater Mine, Waiuta. From 1930 he remained there for the rest of his life. When he arrived in New Zealand he owned a camera and was soon taking photographs. He has left a record of the community of Waiuta, miners working in the mine, social and community events, and views of the township. Most of his surviving photographs of the town date from the 1920s and 1930s. (Information from New Zealand History online. Biographical notes available in Photographic Archive biographical file)
