Jacobsen writes of his childhood in the Nelson area, his friends and acquaintances, working as a miner, the 1913 Waterfront strike, his World War I experiences as a Private with the 1st Canterbury Infantry Battalion, working as a commercial fisherman in the French Pass area in the 1930s, and his discovery of uranium in Buller Gorge
