Description

Shows Prime Minister Richard Seddon with muddy hands, as he digs at the site of the Port Chalmers dry dock. He is speaking to a man in suit and hat.

The suited man is William Cable, chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board in 1904-1905. He was known to point out often that "big shipping repair jobs were constantly being sent out to Lyttelton or Port Chalmerse reason that Wellington, with the best commercial harbour in the country, had no dock at all" (See Cable's obituary, Dominion, 10 June 1922 - pasted in NZ Obituaries, volume 2 (1922), page 18)
